The major two options probably don’t qualify as genuine field guides, but they have excellent info on habitat, locations etc. for the species as well and will serve as decent field guides for a beginner For the Perth area only, Simon Nevill et al’s “Guide to Wildlife of the Perth Region” might be worth a look. It is a photoguide and covers most of the birds occurring in the greater Perth area, along with the mammals, reptiles, frogs and some of the invertebrates and plants. A photoguide and often doesn’t have photos of juvenile, immature plumages etc. but as an introductory guide it is excellent. I’m pretty sure it’s still available from the BirdLife WA office at Bold Park (open 9.30am-12.30pm weekdays) A photo of it here http://www.chartandmapshop.com.au/19130/Guide-to-the-Wildlife-of-the-Perth-Region/9780975601907 For the greater south-west, another of Simon’s offerings, “Birds of the Greater South-West” may also be useful. Also a photo guide with only 1-2 photos per species, and more useful to advanced birders for the wealth of gen on locations, habits etc. for species. Also available from the BirdLife WA office and probably other places too A photo here: http://www.chartandmapshop.com.au/19132/Birds-of-the-Greater-South-West-of-Western-Australia/9780980348125 The new Pizzey regional guides do not have one for the south-west yet, but it would be worth keeping an eye out to see if one does eventuate – this would provide more of a genuine field guide option For the whole of WA, Simon has just released a new guide in the same format as his Greater Southwest guide, or there is Johnstone & Storr’s “Field Guide to the Birds of Western Australia” (this is out of print as far as I know though) Hope this helps Cheers, John > Date: Fri, 7 Feb 2014 17:45:28 +1100 > From: david.billinghurst@gmail.com > To: birding-aus@birding-aus.org > Subject: [Birding-Aus] Children’s field guide – Perth and environs > > Can anyone recommend a field guide (or other book) covering birds of the > Perth area (+ south-west WA?) suitable for younger children. > > My aunt wants to buy one for her grandchildren, who are showing an > interest in birds.
