I saw an article on birdwatching places in Australia and wonder what the bird on the right in the accompanying photo is? Susan Knowles sknowles46@aapt.net.au

For those who missed the original image, it was this one (without the watermark)…. http://www.shutterstock.com/pic-131249246/stock-photo-gouldian-finch-colorful-birds-taking-a-bath-near-the-waterfall.html On Mon, 5 Jan 2015 16:56:00 +1100, SeanDooley < sdooley@bigpond.net.au> wrote: — Joseph Morlan, Pacifica, CA “It turns out we’re very good at not seeing things” – Jack Hitt

Hi all, I know the founder and owner of the website oversixty.com.au (I worked with her at Ninemsn) and emailed her about the forums comments (I actually forwarded some emails). This may have had something to do with the photo change! Cheers, Charles Hunter Bronte, NSW

Hi all, I can find the article, following the link, but can’t find a photo of finches – only a Red-colared Lorikeet. Must be missing something???? John Tongue Devonport, Tas. On 05/01/2015, at 4:24 PM, Joseph Morlan < jmorlan@gmail.com> wrote:

Looks more like a Tricolored Parrotfinch (Erythrura tricolor) to me. And yes, those are certainly aviary birds. On Mon, 5 Jan 2015 16:13:52 +1100, “Philip Veerman” < pveerman@pcug.org.au> wrote: — Joseph Morlan, Pacifica, CA “It turns out we’re very good at not seeing things” – Jack Hitt

Ha good question, Surely the photo is engineered (photoshopped – the birds’ toes are missing) and or equally likely taken in an aviary- (three Gouldian Finches in the one photo, one of each head colour and one Blue-faced Parrot Finch together at a waterfall is pretty unlikely). The one you are asking about maybe is a photoshopped Blue-faced Parrot Finch with blue extended to the body or is there such a similar bird in PNG or other islands. Actually on checking I believe suggest it is a form that has been selected for in captivity, see e.g. this website http://www.theparrotfinches.com/trichroa.htm for various aviary bred forms of the species. There are photos there of the same odd colour form as on that promo photo (along with lots of other odd finches and parrots). me! me! (only because I can google not because I actually know) It’s a bird found in Indonesia and Timor Leste, a tricolour or forbes parrot finch (*Erythrura tricolor)* http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tricolored_parrotfinch very pretty, no doubt prettier in real life. cheers storm On 5 January 2015 at 14:44, Susan Knowles < sknowles46@aapt.net.au> wrote:
