That kind of thing should be taken care of by laws that insist that all cats are sold already neutered. It’s a bit hard to get a kitten on impulse if no one’s got any they’re trying to give away. The tricky part is that they can’t be neutered till they’re several months old, and people want kittens. Peter Shute

Hi Allan Thank you for your email. I’ve friends who keep their cats as secure as a herpetologist keeps his pet snakes, and I’ve no problem with that at all. However, we often had Aboriginal relatives staying with us and I know of the pressure the kids put on the adults to get a sweet little kitten. By that time we didn’t have a cat, but their friends at school had cats, and they saw them on television. Some did take them back to the outstations. Don’t get me wrong. I’ve had cats I loved as much as my dog. But the legitimacy of having a cat as one would a dog or a parrot is what I believe we must change. thanx for that Tony, let’s hope that these guys get something suitable developed for the rest of the country as well where 1080 is more dangerous to non-target natives. if any “cat lovers” object to any such baiting programs then they need to be fought off with all the available evidence so that such a baiting regime becomes common-place all over the country with more than a hint of urgency… all domestic pet cats should be registered & de-sexed by law, & patrolled for by councils in the same way as dogs… then the pool of potential feral cats will be limited over time as well…surely this isn’t rocket science!! cheers, martin cachard, cairns

I am concerned about the length of time it would take to introduce. There is a pressing need to act NOW! Anyone any thoughts on what we could do to help? The New Zealanders are experts at destroying cats I was part of such a program myself years ago on Little Barrier where cyanide was used with great success. Obviously not possible over all of Australia, but may be feasible within a controlled area. Just typing out loud and feeling a tad frustrated. —–Original Message—– Carl Clifford Sent: Tuesday, 17 February 2015 1:12 PM Cc: birding-aus Sad news, Greg. It is about time our Federal and State Governments bit the bullet and introduced a biological control method for cats. Certainly some pet moggies will be collateral damage, but a vaccine could be developed for domestic use, as in the vaccine used to protect domestic rabbits from calicivirus. If such a control measure is not introduced, we may as well give up on species such as the Night Parrot, as shooting and baiting only affects the tip of the iceberg and as a control measure, they are like incontinence in a dark suit. Before I get flamed, I would like to say that I am a cat lover, but do not keep a cat on environmental and moral grounds. Carl Clifford

Several years ago, after my cat returned home with a freshly killed Forest Kingfisher, I vowed never to have another cat. I believe that all birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts should take that vow.
