G’day all,
We’re going to Europe on an Organ Study Tour, from Sep. 20 to Oct. 10. (Among other organs, I’ll be playing the Westminster Abbey organ.) 😀
But I need a few bird books/field guides as well as some good places for birding, so I can clock up some good birds while were away. We’ll be visiting Switzerland, Austria, Germany, France, Holland, and England.
The itinerary is: FRIDAY 21rd Sept. Basel, Switzerland
SATURDAY 22rd Sept. Basel – maybe the Alps and back
SUNDAY 23rd Sept. Basel – Laufen Laufen – Muri
MONDAY 24th Sept. Basel – Heiliggeistkirche Heiliggeistkirche – Seewen Museum Seewen Museum
TUESDAY 25th Sept. Basel – Laufen, am Laufen – Basel, pm
WEDNESDAY 26th Sept. Basel – Salzburg, Austria, via Zurich
THURSDAY 27th Sept. Salzburg
FRIDAY 28th Sept. Salzburg – Linz Linz – Vienna (stay in Vienna for W’end)
SATURDAY 29th Sept. Vienna
SUNDAY 30th Sept. Vienna
MONDAY 1st Oct. Vienna – Naumburg, Germany Naumburg – Leipzig

If you know of any good spots for birding, and good field guides/bird books to buy (field guides preferred, because they are lighter), that would be very much appreciated.

I’d second that – Collins is one of the very best field guides going. I’ve also written a translation guide from English to French, German and Dutch to go with the 1st edition – I lived in Switzerland for a few years and while lots of people speak other languages perfectly, bird names don’t translate literally. I don’t want to spam the board with it, but if you’re interested there’s a link to my website below. A good site for Swiss sightings is http://www.ornitho.ch. I’ve not been birding around Basel, but a bit further south to the west of Bern there’s some fantastic sites like Fanel/Cudrefin and Krummi. In the Alps, there’s a number of easily-accessed mountains which have some great birds, although you’re near the end of the season for a couple of the places like Schynige Platte and the Rothorn. The Schilthorn is good for Alpine Accentor, Alpine Chough, White-winged Snowfinch and has Lammergeier (but don’t call them that there – Bearded Vulture is the preferred name. Famers though Lammergeiers preyed on young lambs and persecuted them to the point of extinction in some areas). Cheers,

Can’t get a better field guide to Europe than the Collins Bird Guide – it’s probably the best field guide ever produced… (in my humble opinion – and many others!)

Hello Great birding in Europe. I live in Holland myself and there are a lot of good places to visit in our country. In the north we have the Waddenzee. Birding can be great especially on Texel an Island just of the coast. An other good spot is Lauwersmeer with many shore birds ducks and raptors. In central holland we have some forests and in the south west the province of Zeeland offers many good birds as wel. For Holland you should check out the next website: http://www.waarneming.nl/. For Englisch just clic on the flag in the upper richt corner and select your language. On this website you will find hondreds of sightings each day! Rareties on the front page and also common birds on the button observations. Also mammels plants insects etc. Every sigthing is set on a map so you can see were you have to go.
