Dear Birding-Aus List,

My wife and I are visiting Australia and recently came across 2 emus in
Warby Ovens NP in Victoria.

Does anyone have an idea of how likely these are to be wild emus, and
therefore eligible for our birding list? Our problem was that they were
behind a fence and it looked like someone’s property, so my thought was
that they were captive. On the other hand, our field guide says that
they like unirrigated croplands so perhaps they were just visiting
through some gap in the fence?

We also saw a couple in Serendip Sanctuary near the edge (not inside the
part of the park where people visit), on the border of Forest Rd North
while driving past.
