Hi,
No sooner had we got SMS, Twitter and other messages out about the Emperor Penguin and ash clouds had cleared, it seems that perhaps the biggest potential rarity of the year for ANYWHERE in the world, has been taken into captivity.

On the subject of twitching, my understanding is that southern penguins that lob up on “mainland” beaches are often in trouble, and are frequently taken into care. Unlike SIPOs etc, they aren’t going to join the daily routine of the other shorebirds and hang around for extended periods. I don’t know if anyone has kept records of cold system penguins on “mainland” beaches, but it would be interesting to know how many have been available for the ticking trickle for more than 48 hours.
Regards, Laurie.

I certainly didn’t interpret simons email that way-I took it as tongue in cheek – twitchers laughing at themselves has become is an established and entertaining literary genre – I don’t know any birdwatcher who would seriously wish a bird to be left to suffer in order to get a tick…

Hi Bob,
I think you’ll find you’ve got your story wrong here! The decision to leave the bird had nothing to do with bird watchers but was a decision taken by the NZ Department of Conservation. While the bird appeared to be in good health they didn’t intervene. Bird watchers might be guilty of inappropriate behaviour at times but not in this case. The vast majority of people that turned up to see the penguin were just general public just interested in viewing nature. The twitching community in NZ is very small and has no influence on this sort of thing!
Cheers,
Tony Wilson.
