Drink troughs

When one travels along the Stuart Hw. through Daley Waters, Newcastle Waters etc to Tennant Creek and then along the Barkly Hw. to Barkly Homestead and onto Camooweal on the Qld border there were in the old days bores with windmills connected to stock troughs for the drovers to water their stock the distance they could move their cattle etc in a day, with the advent of road trains they are long gone into disrepair but some places large poly tanks have been installed and someone has put drinking containers under the taps for the birds to drink out of and some have signs on them asking travellers to fill the containers. Does anyone know the history of who put these containers there and what birds have been seen coming into drink at them ? I have only ever stopped at them right on dusk and being in a hurry have left at daylight next morning and have only seen thousands of Zebra Finches, Crested Pigeons and lots of Brown Quail just on dark. I have seen Flock Bronzewings and Pictorella Manikin’s just a few Km from the tanks. Would be interested to know if anyone has spent some time at any of them and noted what can be found around them ?? Barney Enders
