Draft Plan for Lake Lorne, Drydale

Since Lake Lorne is know as a waterfowl hotspot for species like Freckled, Pink-eared and Blue-billed ducks, i thought some members on the list might be interested in the following:

    Aaaargh!! A fun-park???

Speaking from the point of view of a “foreign” visitor I was completely amazed by the density of water birds at Lake Lorne – we went there looking for Freckled Ducks (failed) but virtually every other duck was there, plus several sorts of cormorants, spoonbills, snipe etc and a lot of it was breeding. We had low expectations of such a small “suburban” site but were very impressed. We walked right round (which was a bit wet at the end – hence the boardwalk proposals presumably). It was the best single wetland site we came across on our last trip, and because it is relatively small you can see the birds very well.

It would be good to have ID sign boards to help the public identify all the things they can see.

Not entirely sure about the wide path – it would be good if this was some way from the lake, to avoid disturbance, with separate access tracks leading to view points closer to the lake.

Thanks Peter. This sounds like great news!

A few years ago I was talking to the people who run the adjoining historic Bellarine Railway. They indicated that they were hoping to turn Lake Lorne into a tourist fun-park-type wetland, featuring footbridges, islands and paddle boats. It may be worth keeping an eye on how this pans out.

    Cheers,

    Tim
