http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/19/sony-digital-recording-binoculars-look-like-military-spec-night/ I saw a short review on these in the paper today. I am very tempted!!! Joshua Bergmark ===============================

With dual electronic viewfinders, rather than a direct optical path, they’ll be useless once the battery’s flat.

They do sound interesting though, and they might potentially be better than optical binoculars in certain conditions. A 3 hour battery life sounds very limiting, but if they hibernate when you’re not using them then that could mean they’ll last a few days of normal use.

I wonder what the resolution of the viewfinders is. As far as I know, the best available EVFs for still cameras are only just reaching acceptable levels now, so I don’t hold much hope for these being as good.

It would also be interesting to see how they cope with backlit subjects, if it’s really just a pair of cameras.

Would be interesting to see how they work out. Binoculars are normally pretty simple and rugged devices with nothing much to go wrong (until you drop them!) – I wonder if you can still use these as bins if the fancy bits breakdown or the battery goes flat? I also wonder how heavy they are compared to normal bins with all that extra electronics, battery etc
