After the chaotic weather in South-east Queensland a couple of weeks back, and all the support that we received here let’s hope that all our friends and birding-aus readers in North Queensland stay safe.
Looks like a testing-week to come,
Take care,
Tom
I tried the website at midnight Melbourne time (11pm in Queensland) and found the following message:
Radar service is currently unavailable due to: Sorry outage information is currently unavailable.
Not surprising really. Richard
Yasi is now visible on the Willis Island radar loop: http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDR412.loop.shtml
I see that the latest recorded pressure for Yasi is 924 hpa. It is shaping up to be the biggest system to hit Australia since 1918 when two cyclones struck in succession. One with a pressure of 933 hit Mackay and produced 2.7 metre waves in the centre of Mackay together with 1.4 metres of rain in 3 days. The second with a pressure of about 1926 hpa outside the core hit Innisfail. The storm surge at Mission beach [3.7 metres] swept hundreds of metres inland.

An ABC radio reporter said that it is so big that it doesn’t matter where it crosses the coast, a huge area will be affected. While the centre will probably pass over Cairns, the seek shelter warning extends to Sarina [Mackay], about a day’s drive to the south, and Hughenden to the west.

Hopefully the people of the north will come through OK and be in a position to enjoy a few good windblown vagrants on their doorstep [perhaps some shearwaters will turn up on the Tableland]. Given the likely storm surge and extremely high winds I wouldn’t be doing a sea watch during the next 48 hours though.
People with a sense of nemesis can follow the progress of the cyclone on the NOAA website – http://www.goes.noaa.gov/sohemi/sohemiloops/shirgmscol.html . It is a humungous system, about the size of Queensland.
Regards Laurie.

I’ve emailed Peter and Val Valentine, but have not heard from them. Helen Larson, and Keith and Lindsay Fisher – our thoughts are with you and anyone else affected. Denise
