Cook’s vs Pycroft’s

Hi All

To my eye the petrel photographed by Jack Shick off LHI looks like a typical Cook’s Petrel you would photograph off Little Barrier Island. The relatively pale grey head considering the light conditions and extensive black smudge line under the eye and extensive white supercilium matching in patterning photographs of Cook’s taken in November in Hauraki Gulf extremely closely and differing from the excellent images of Pycroft’s supplied by Ross Silcocks. The tail structure is identical to photographs I have of Cook’s at Little Barrier. It does not show much of a collaring effect forming a fairly even sweep of contrast below the eye up to the hind crown although a bit of notching in the ear coverts is interesting. My vote is for Cook’s.

Cheers

Dion
