Hi all There’s been a few reports of dry conditions in the northern SA – southern Qld outback. I’ve just come back from a trip up the Strzelecki and Birdsville tracks and can report that it’s indeed very, very dry up the northern parts. Talking to the owner of Cowarie station they had only had about 25mm rain in 16 months. And the landscape and birdlife reflect that pretty well. Strangely enough the southern parts of both tracks have received good rainfall (there were large puddles in places) and the landscape looks a lot better. It’s quite green all the way up to the Cooper Creek on the Birdsville track, and up to about Montecollina Bore on the Strzelecki track. Associated with the green-ness of the landscape are good bird numbers (although nothing like 2 years ago) and we had a great time with 6 Letter-winged Kites, 2 Grey Falcons, Black-breasted Buzzard, Eyrean Grasswren, Brolgas, Banded Whiteface, Cinnamon Quail-thrush, Gibberbird and many more good species. Unfortunately, as reported by Peter Morgan, a large feral cat had taken over one of the Letter-winged Kites nests….
