Rain at Gluepot..

Unless the roads have been upgraded since we were last there, rain of any significance at Gluepot results in a “Glue Pot”, and stranding until the roads dry out.

Not a bad place to be locked down though, depending on who else is there.

Running out of species

'Sorry, can't help with your Melbourne list, but I'm locked down in Sydney and have a suggestion if you get extended. I've been working on my COVID cold cases from old photo ID problems. I won't go into the ethics of ticking from a photo but will say I've added 3-4 ticks since the Sydney . . . → Read More: Running out of species

Running out of species

I've been attempting to add a new species every day this year and the latest Melbourne 5 Km lockdown is proving a challenge. I'm based in Prahran so limited to roughly from Royal Botanic Gardens to Elwood. Laughing Kookaburra and Silvereye are my last realistic options. I would then still need 4 more to get . . . → Read More: Running out of species

Re Peewees.

Lockdown research indicates that large flocks of Magpie larks seasonally migrate to the North of Australia and back, probably accounting for the Townsville mangrove mob.

But not for the Bellarine Peninsula nighttime roost. Doesn’t seem to be like the grouping of single young male Magpies but a real group behavioural trait. . . . → Read More: Birding-Aus Digest, Vol 93, Issue 4

Mascarene Petrel in Australian waters

Just found this tucked away in the section about new books on Birdforum, from Harrison’s new Seabirds Guide (Lynx), quite amazing news: From satellite tracking data of 14 individuals of the critically endangered seabird from Reunion, it was found to be dispersing in the Arabian Sea to NW Australia (Saunier et al 2021) and the . . . → Read More: Mascarene Petrel in Australian waters

Re roosting Magpie larks.

Were these Seasonal roosts ? Alan suggests that they are. Any sex bias ?

Roasting Aggregation of Magpie Larks I don't remember what time of the year but at least 6 years ago I saw hundreds of Magpie Larks come into roost in Mangroves at Rowes Bay in Townsville. Joan Wharton

Roosting aggregation of Magpie larks

I'm looking out my study window at the gathering of Magpie Larks that occurs around this time every day on our property on the Bellarine Peninsula. There are usually two pairs of Magpie Larks on our property and last summer one pair fledged three young so we could see up to five quite regularly.
