Anyone who’s had enough of me banging on about duck shooting will be able to hear from a much higher authority on the subject this Thursday night in Melbourne. Laurie Levy, campaign director of the Coalition Against Duck Shooting, will give a talk to Birdlife Melbourne’s monthly meeting on 18th July at 8 pm, Birdlife Australia National Office, 60 Leicester Street, Carlton. Laurie will discuss the 2013 season, in which several changes in management of duck season were put into place. Media scrutiny and opposition to duck shooting became more difficult than ever, whilst the Box Flat Nature Reserve near Donald became the site of a secret massacre of at least 2000 birds, including 200 Freckled Ducks, Blue-billed Ducks, swans, and other protected species. Despite being officially ‘investigated’, no charges have yet been laid against anyone. The legal shooting of ducks continues to be one of Australia’s most contentious wildlife issues. Come along and hear what most of us need to know.
