We have just got a new, unusual backyard bird this morning – a Buff-banded Rail. It was first observed on the lawn about 20 feet away from the backdoor and eventually made its way up to the backdoor. It was finding plenty of food including small snails. Plumage was in excellent condition as it was a good opportunity to study the plumage in detail. We now have had 2 rail and 3 crake species on or adjacent to our property.

I had one in my front garden in suburban Box Hill (VIC) on two occasions in June. It was happily foraging in the very damp soil between tussock grasses and Lomandras on the first occasion.
It re-appeared 4 days later, wandered across the garden and down the path before flying up on to the side fence, then flying down into the neighbour’s garden (conventional lawn, rose bushes, etc).
