G’day all The Brown Songlark is usually the last of the spring migrants to arrive down this way. So far I haven’t seen or heard one. What’s happening with them elsewhere? As a follow up – saw one male Brown Songlark flying across the highway while driving (west of Hay) and heard one at the meeting site (about 10km south of Hay on the Cobb Highway) today so there are some about (though in the last few years usually see a few on the Hay Plain). Two Australian Pratincoles in flight near Ravensworth was an added bonus. Hi Steve Believe it or not Brown Songlarks are around, perhaps not in SW Vic so much. I recently came back from a trip to the Gawler Ranges in South Australia & I found them numerous, they were mixed in with little feeding flocks of pipits & Orange Chats. The thing is I never heard a peep out of them, and they are much harder to see if they are silent. I’ve always found the songlarks a bit up & down in terms of there presence in the Summer. Sometimes they are very common & sometimes absent, they are truly a bird that depends on conditions. I think we’ve been lucky over the last few years, both songlarks have been rather common, but Browns a bit harder to see this year & Rufous are around, but a little more patchy perhaps? Pallid Cuckoo is another that varies enormously in numbers every season. Often PCs are quite common, but some years hard to find. PCs are rather thin on the ground this year.-Kevin Bartram =============================== To unsubscribe from this mailing list, send the message: unsubscribe (in the body of the message, with no Subject line) http://birding-aus.org ===============================
Hi Steve We didn’t see or hear a single Brown Songlark on our little Moderators’ Bush Bash in western Victoria last month. We did Wyperfeld, Pink Lakes and Little Desert over 5 days 17-21 October. Perhaps a litlte early for Brown Songlark, but I’ve seen them at a few spots along this route in October in the past. No sign of any around Geelong since then but I’ve had my head in a certain iPhone app for most of that time! I would agree with Frank about cuckoos in SW NSW/NW Victoria. I have yet to hear a Pallid around Mildura and only one or two Horsfield’s BC as well. Rufous Songlarks were calling early (late August) near Dareton, but I heard none last weekend when at the same location. I have seen a few Brown Songlarks but not in big numbers – driving to Hay and back tomorrow so that should be the test – if not there they won’t be anywhere. It is exceptionally dry at the moment and all the grass that is left is well burnt off which might explain the lower numbers – Woodswallows and Trillers seem to be in the usual sort of numbers. Hi Steve, usual numbers of Browns here in the Hawkesbury however Rufous SL appear to be in short supply ,this is usually the most numerous one. Good numbers of Horsfield,s Bushlarks. —– Original Message —– Sent: Monday, November 25, 2013 12:02 PM =============================== To unsubscribe from this mailing list, send the message: unsubscribe (in the body of the message, with no Subject line) http://birding-aus.org ===============================
They were reported a few (~6) weeks back from the Hoskinstown Plain (in NSW about 20km SE of Canberra).
