I took some photo’s of a pair of Brown Gerygone’s nesting, in Sydney NSW.
The dark colour on their chest was very noticeable – it is the first time I have seen this plumage on a Gerygone.
The chest was almost black. The feathers did not look wet to me, so I don’t think that they had been bathing.
Can anyone enlighten me as to whether this is breeding plumage or just a darker variation of normal plumage?

Hi Carol
Are you suggesting both birds looked like that? I am sure the two photos at the link are of the same individual.
It looks like some kind of soiling to me – the feathers around the face are also messed up. Maybe it was bathing in something sticky? It will be interesting to see what it looks like tomorrow!
Cheers, Chris.
