Dear all,
Has there been a 100% confirmation that these birds are actually the southern sub-species of the Black-throated Finch? The article doesn’t really explicitly say that. In spring 2000 funded by NPWS, I and others were involved in an extensive search for the BTF throughout northern NSW and Southern Queensland. This resulted in an article in 2001, in the “Australian Bird Watcher” now “Australian Field Ornithology”. This search reinforced the belief that they were extinct in these parts.

According to the EIS (specially appendax 10a) there was a claimed but currently anonymous and unconfirmed record of BTFI at Bimblebox. Follow-up surveys have not confirmed the presence yet. Unless a population is found, this situation will likely result in a condition of approval something like “ongoing survey for BTFI is required and we’ll think of something later if you find some”.
