Black Bittern ID

G’day everyone,

Can someone have a look at the image I took of what I believe to be a juv Black Bittern that I took this morning on Sydney’s Northern Beaches?

I’m not familiar with this bird, but I can’t see any other bird in Morcombe’s of a similar shape and size that has this distinct yellowish stripe down the side of its neck.

    Hi Mark,

I believe it is an immature Black Bittern, there is not very much of the plume showing but in my experience thay can expand or contract the amount of plume showing. It is an immature bird, note the buff edging to the wing and back feathers. The white marking on the foreneck also suggest BB, immature Striated Herons also have streaking on the foreneck, but not white.

Where did you see your bird Mark? I saw a sooty brown bird fly low over Deep Creek this morning at about 10.50 , it was a very brief view and the bird disappeared immediately on landing.I went back at about 11.30 and had an even worse view, on neither occasion did I have bins.Tossed up between immature Striated Heron and BB but I leaned towards BB.

BBs have been known at Deep Creek for over 20 years to my knowledge, I had them nesting there about 3 years ago, I believe their eggs were robbed by a Rufous Night Heron hhich I saw in the nest tree.
