Birdpedia – Australia – Weekly Digest

The following is a digest of Sightings Reported on Birdpedia for the period Monday, June 16, 2014 to Sunday, June 22, 2014: Area: SA Location: Onkaparinga Estuary Sooty Oystercatcher (Haematopus fuliginosus) (1) Three sooty Oyster catchers flying low and piping, into the Estuary Mouth and landed on the rocks under the cliff where the crested terns usually loaf/rest. This is certainly a first for me tho’ they may be more common along the Seaford Foreshore? Eastern Reef Egret (Egretta sacra) (1) Dark Morph Egret working the shallows upstream of the footbridge. I would love to know if these birds have a long life or if a single bird turns out here every year. The last twenty years has produced a sighting in this area! Reported by: Anthony John Bainbridge on Monday, June 16, 2014 ——————————————— Date: Tuesday, June 17, 2014 Location: Mangrove complex at Price, Gulf St Vincent Osprey (Pandion haliaetus) (1) Single adult, seen perching and hunting over tidal channels through mangroves near Price. There were large schools of mullet moving on the flood-tide event nearby. There are few records of osprey from northern Gulf St Vincent and given recent and historical breeding records from mangrove areas in SA, observers should be alert to the possibility in this area.
