The following is a digest of Sightings Reported on Birdpedia for the period Monday, March 3, 2014 to Sunday, March 9, 2014: Area: SA Location: Black Point Greater Sand Plover (Charadrius leschenaultii) (1) One bird was seen in full breeding plumage. I have been seeing a single one here every year since 2006 so am making a guess that it is the same one. It roosts with the flock of Red-necked Stint, but heads off by itself when it notices anyone, & despite my best efforts of crawling over sand & seaweed it will not allow me to get closer than about 10 metres to photograph it.( It was still there the next morning, so I don’t think that I disturbed it any more than the people fishing & walking their dogs!) I am somewhat puzzled by the fine black line which bisects the white forehead, which is not shown in any of the Field Guides I have. This is a characteristic of the Lesser, but ‘my’ bird is the Greater in every other respect, e.g.plumage & length of bill & legs. The latest Pizzey & Knight mentions that there are 3 races, so could this be the case for this bird? I will post 2 of the 16 photos which I have taken to show this.
