The following is a digest of Sightings Reported on Birdpedia for the period Monday, January 6, 2014 to Sunday, January 12, 2014: Area: SA Location: Onkaparinga River large pond adjacent South Rd Fairy Martin (Hirundo ariel) (30) At least 30 birds hunting over pond, as this species is listed as uncommon in the Adelaide area (Birds SA field list) it maybe of interest to anyone wanting to see/ photograph them there are nest sites nearby so birds will be around. Reported by: William Brooker on Monday, January 6, 2014 ——————————————— Date: Monday, January 6, 2014 Location: Pareora; 319 Balaklava Rd, Pt Wakefield Australian Pratincole (Stiltia isabella) (1) Australian Pratincole; still present. Letter-winged Kite(6) have not been seen for 3-4 days. For more information ring Wendy on 0418 844 546. Australasian Bittern (Botaurus poiciloptilus) (9) Nine Australasian Bitterns were heard clearly at various localities with in the reserve. Sightings of five individual birds were recorded mainly around the wetlands near to the campsite. One adult Bittern was observed in a marsh along the western boundary where it is suspected it may be attending to a nest. Reported by: Edward Smith on Thursday, January 9, 2014 ——————————————— Date: Monday, January 6, 2014 Location: On our property at Rockleigh Rainbow Bee-eater (Merops ornatus) (5) Last weekend Pete spotted a bee-eater going into its nest, a neat hole in sandy ground. Today there were 2 adults and 3 youngsters perching together. Brown Treecreeper (Climacteris picumnus) (4) The two young treecreepers fledged a few weeks ago. They have now found how to climb tree trunks, but not how to ‘beep’, instead giving a chittering call. They are completely unafraid. One perched little more than a metre away (no camera of course) Black-faced Cuckoo-shrike (Coracina novaehollandiae) (4) Another family of 2 adults and 2 juveniles still being fed. Reported by: Michael Wood on Wednesday, January 8, 2014 ——————————————— Date: Wednesday, January 8, 2014 Location: Lochiel to Nantawarra Road Black-eared Miner (Manorina melanotis) (1) At the lookout on the side of the highway on the left hand side coming back from Lochiel to Nantawarra. Not the truck one on the crest of the hill, the ‘bushy’ one before that. It was doing over a tree so I had a very good and fairly long look at it. Pectoral Sandpiper (Calidris melanotos) (1) An n br adult observed at very close proximity foraging on a small muddy sand bar immediately below the end of Whicker Road. Bird showed obvious dark and clear well defined striations on the upper brown breast and a distinct white belly. The brown streaked crown and the finer more obvious decurved bill with clear yellow base was conspicuous. Not feeding together but both visible at same time. At the northern end of Whicker Rd.
