Birdpedia – Australia – Weekly Digest

The following is a digest of Sightings Reported on Birdpedia for the period Monday, August 10, 2020 to Sunday, August 16, 2020:

Area: SA

Location: (Almost) on our Rockleigh property (20 metres outside our boundary)

Australian Owlet-nightjar (Aegotheles cristatus) (1) On the hunt for bridal creeper we found a large patch under a tree. Just before starting serious digging, an owlet nightjar flew and landed on a branch about 3 metres away, where it stayed while I clicked away with my camera. We probably woke it up from its slumbers. Last time (the only time) we saw one previously was February 2011, and judging by the excitement of our neighbours at the news, they probably haven’t seen one at all.

Almost in the same place we spotted 4 varied sitellas (an unusual sighting) and heard a magpie lark, very uncommon in dry Rockleigh

Reported by: Barbara and Peter Bansemer on Friday, August 14, 2020
