Shining Bronze-Cuckoo (Chrysococcyx lucidus) (1)
Magpie-lark (Grallina cyanoleuca) (2)
A brilliant weekend at Rockleigh, with 26 species seen, including not-often-seen birds apart from those listed above – black-faced cuckoo shrikes, purple-crowned lorikeets, Australian ringneck, white-browed babblers. On a usual weekend we see 15-18 species. Magpie larks appeared for a few weeks after the January 2014 bushfire, then vanished till last September, then vanished again. This weekend they sat on the shed roof, and very aggressively chased a wedgie, aided by a magpie. Wedgies are not very manoeuvrable and smaller birds enjoy making thorough pests of themselves.
We hope we got the ID of the shining bronze-cuckoo right, from its call, general shape and way of perching – the light was poor when it appeared. The same bird was seen in mid-February and gave only a brief view, but called from a hidden spot.

Striped Honeyeater (Plectorhyncha lanceolata) (1) The bird was seen on the Northern side of Kepa road, near the Brukunga Rifle Range, just over the fence in a lightly wooded area with a number of Spiny-cheeked Honeyeaters in attendance.

Location: Laratinga Wetlands
Crested Shrike-tit (Falcunculus frontatus) (4) Two adults feeding two young in the lower canopy of a gum tree. Occasionally being harassed by White-plumed Honeyeaters. The gum trees were to the west of the toilet block and shelters (see GPS reading).

Location: Lion’s Bird Hide Barrage Rd Goolwa
Spotless Crake (Porzana tabuensis) (4) Birds were to be found in several areas of the swamp but were easy to observe from the hide. The reeds have been slashed at the front of the hide,water level as dropped so lots of mud showing around the margins.
Sharp-tailed Sandpiper (Calidris acuminata) (30) Out in front of hide.
