Birdpedia – Australia – Weekly Digest

The following is a digest of Sightings Reported on Birdpedia for the period Monday, October 26, 2015 to Sunday, November 1, 2015: Area: SA Location: Pengilly Scrub, Molloy Road, Wasleys Budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus) (10) Feeding quietly near the entrance gate. The scrub was very lively, including three species each of Parrots and Woodswallows, lots of Bee-eaters and an Owlet-Nightjar. Surprisingly, no Rufous Songlarks were observed. Reported by: Kevin Stracey on Monday, October 26, 2015 ——————————————— Location: Gawler River – diversion dam next to Northern Expressway (Two Wells Road) Pink-eared Duck (Malacorhynchus membranaceus) (7) Birds eventually flew towards Gawler Australian Shelduck (Tadorna tadornoides) (2) No adults seen, just 2 ducklings paddling out of reeds Red-kneed Dotterel (Erythrogonys cinctus) (3) I Black-fronted Dotterel (Elseyornis melanops) (1) Australian White Ibis (Threskiornis molucca) (2) Black-winged Stilt (Himantopus himantopus) (2) Pacific Black Duck (Anas superciliosa) (2) Water levels dropping exposing muddy areas. The dotterel so we’re in amongst some of the exposed reeds. Reported by: Richard Woodland on Tuesday, October 27, 2015 ——————————————— Date: Sunday, October 25, 2015 Location: Magazine Road Wetland White-necked Heron (Ardea pacifica) (1) One bird flew in from the west and settled quietly in one of the middle ponds Hoary-headed Grebe (Poliocephalus poliocephalus) (31) A single group of 31 birds was in the pond in front of the bird hide. On 18 October there was a group of 23 birds in this pond and another 13 in the adjacent pond Wood Sandpiper (Tringa glareola) (2) Two birds were seen, and similarly two were also present on 18 October Sharp-tailed Sandpiper (Calidris acuminata) (1) There were, I would estimate, +30 Sharpies in and around the bird hide pond. It was fairly windy and many of them were sheltering on the fringes of the pond so were difficult to count. Crested Tern (Sterna bergii) (1) One bird was sitting on a bank in the first pond than runs alongside the road into the wetland. This is my first sighting of this species at Magazine Road. Australian Pelican (Pelecanus conspicillatus) (22) In addition to the 22 in the ponds there were at least another half a dozen flying about the area. In my experience this is quite a large number for this site. Reported by: Rod Tetlow on Monday, October 26, 2015 ——————————————— Need more information about a sighting?
