Birdline Central & Southern Queensland Weekly Update

Birdline Central & Southern Queensland Published sightings for the week ending 25 Jan 2015. Thu 22 Jan Wandering Whistling Duck Buckley’s Hole Lagoon Two breeding pairs of Wandering Whistling Ducks at southern end of lagoon on shoreline. One pair have 8 ducklings, the other pair have four. Jan Nargar Wed 21 Jan Glossy Black-Cockatoo 43 Gatton Street, Grandchester Heard the glossies calling in amongst the sulphur crested racket this morning (06:11). Went outside and watched 6 fly right overhead (NW) in the direction of their feeding area on top of the ridge. Haven’t seen them for over 12 months. Did not have enough time to attempt to tell sexes. Strangely, as they flew away the sulphur crested noise followed them. I did not see any sulphur cresteds (too many trees on my block), but it sounded like they were following the glossies or even making sure they kept moving through their (the sulphur crested’s) territory? Peter Copping Mon 19 Jan Wood Sandpiper, Pectoral Sandpiper, Pale-vented Bush-hen Dowse Lagoon, Sandgate Wood Sandpiper is back again this evening after a 3 week absence, a single Pectoral is back too, both at the northern end. Good views of a pair of Bush-hens picking their way along the southern bank, clearly saw the pair, but there may have been 3 or 4. Ged Tranter
