It appears that birders wanting to access fellow birders via the birdingpals website now have to pay a fee. I tested this by attempting to contact myself to see if I could take myself birding and ,yes indeed, it now seems that a fee is payable before access is granted to a registered birdingpal. So whereas in the past I could freely communicate with myself about birding activity, I now have to pay someone $10 for this privelege (it would appear to be a yearly fee). I would have thought that the birdingpals administrator(s) would have informed registered birdingpals of this significant change. Although not very regular, previous communications from the birdingpal administrator have at least notified of significant changes in the operation of the scheme. Does anyone know what’s the go with this? My husband and I will be arriving in Brisbane next Monday, 2 Sept. We will travel by small campervan up to Daintree and return to Brisbane by Nov. 1. We would like to meet some resident birders and bird with you if you are available. We had tried to contact some birdingpals but found that it is now a business charging fees to make connections. Are there any clubs or groups that have outings planned in the next 2 months? We will try to get internet whenever we can as we will not have a phone probably. Any help would be appreciated. Hi Russ & All, Birding-Aus deserves a bit of self-promotion, it’s a great community, and an excellent source of information. As a perennial learner, I appreciate the useful information often shared by some members, it helps support and cultivates interest in birds & our environment, in contrast to some of the competitive attributes other birders have. Thank you. Today’s best bird sighting here has been an Australasian Grebe, on land! I’ve only ever seen a Tachybaptus Grebe out of the water once before, and they resemble a small Penguin. It certainly made me look twice! I’m sure many of us are grateful to both you and the hard-working moderators. Thanks! Birding-Aus also costs a little to run (plus many hours of time from the much-maligned moderators, mostly not me!) but I can assure everyone that Birding-Aus will stay free. It may not have quite the scope or reach of birdingpals, but it is still one way of getting in touch with other birders, in this country at least. Please excuse this bit of shameless self-promotion! Very poor – although it does cost money to run a site. I have used it a lot in the past and have just had an email from a US birder – he did not mention the fee though.
