Hi All,
On July 7, we have to spend 7 hours in Kuala Lumpur enroute home from Borneo. Does anyone know of some good places to bird close to the airport, especially for waders?

Thanks to everyone for the information on KL! I think without the information on the KLIA express we would definitely opt to stay in the airport rather than risk missing our flight.

Judith – I agree with Charles, go to FRIM! Have been there several times and it is wonderful forest. While travelling alone once I had a taxi drop me and then come back for me after 2 hours (I didn’t have any more spare time) and he did so very promptly; did not charge me any extra for this. I didn’t know about the KLIA express though, thanks Charles. Helen

Coastal areas are harder so I would recommend the following: 1. Forest Research Institute of Malaysia or FRIM. It is about 15kms away from KL city centre and is part of Bukit Lagong Forest Reserve (some people have seen hornbills here). It is an amazing forest reserve so close to the city. Get the taxi to wait for you if you can without the meter on (most drivers will be happy to do this for a trip back to the airport). There is a small entry fee. Spend 2-3 hours here. I go here most times I a in KL. 2. Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve which is in the centre of KL. Small rainforest reserve which can be busy but you will see more than 7 new species. 3. Lake Gardens. Nice mostly man made park with lakes. You will see some waders here (you can't tick birds you see at the nearby Bird Park though!) 4. Templer Park (I have not been here but is about 20kms noth of the city). Get back to KL Sentral and you will be back at KLIA within 30 mins or so for your flight to Borneo. Cheers, Charles Hunter

Hi Judith
I spend a lot of time in KL [and will be there again in July] and agree with the others. Traffic and palm plantations are a problem near KLIA.
Lake Gardens is a possibility if you have enough time.
Nearer the airport is Putrajaya where you can find the Paya Indah wetlands……….but there are few waders in Malaysia at this time of the year.

Hi Judith,
Drop a line to the Malaysian Nature Society, they might be able to suggest some spots around KLIA, which might be useful. There is a lot of palm plantation and industry around the airport. The hardest thing would be to get out from the airport and back. Most of the cabbies at KLIA are only interested in one thing, getting back into KL.
One alternative, is to catch the train into KL Sentral (28 min non- stop KLIA Ekspress and 35 min 3 stops KLIA Transit) and walk or grab a cab to Taman Tasik (Lake Gardens). Taman Tasik has a good mix of wetlands and parklands and interesting birds can turn up there at time. If things are quiet in TT, there is always the bird park’s aviary.

you could spend several hours in a traffic jam trying to get anywhere! Plenty of oil palm plantations to look at. You could try going to Port Dickson and along the coast just north of it. Have something to eat there and pretend you are not looking for birds, then you will see things. Good luck! Helen
