Chris Sanderson & I had a Common Tern perched on telegraph wires at North Arm, on the Sunshine Coast. I’ve not seen terns of any species doing this before. See here for more:

We also saw Square-tailed Kite and a pair of Bush-hens in the North Arm area.

Many years ago, and in rather strong winds, I watched a Arctic Tern here in N. Norway fishing from an overhead wire, almost as if he were a Kingfisher. This was over a narrow passage with some current (salt water). i remember that it looked quite handy, and I wondered why terns had not’discovered’ this use of wires more regularly. But I have not seen it since.

Hi Greg,
I have never seen a Common Tern perched on a powerline but on 29 January 2011 Gary and Margaret Eggins observed and photographed 600-800 Common Terns perched on powerlines straddling the Clarence River at Maclean, North Coast NSW. Not only was this a large flock and the use of powerlines very unusual but they were kilometres upriver from where I would have expected to see them.
