Is there any evolutionary advantage in making a loud noise? I have often wondered why parrots make such a racket when they fly. It seems to me to be a very silly thing to do as it would attract the attention of every raptor for miles around. David Robertson Adelaide

A loud call means flocks can disperse further to feed, and still regroup easily. It also means they can broadcast a food location and signal danger from further, and can advertise ownership of a bigger territory. All the things other birds do with their calls, but bigger. Just guessing. Peter Shute
