Hello all, I know this has been around before but I believe what we need is a central phone number to call in all rare sightings. An email address or forum is not good enough. Many people still don’t have email or subscribe to birding-aus. In remote areas it may take days to reach an internet cafe. Everyone has a phone of some sort. Its the easiest way. ONE national number! Many major sightings are by birders that have never even heard of birding-aus and do not know who to contact if they see something unusual. In the two local birdwatching clubs nearest to where I live, I reckon less than 5% of members have ever looked at birding-aus and 80% have never heard of it! The question is, how do you get this phone number to everybody. The easiest way is to get the authors of the major field guides to put the number PROMINENTLY in their field guides. Every birder/birdwatcher in Australia has at least one of the major field guides. Cheers Richard

Yes Mike, we all agree; BUT when you’re on Coco’s or Ashmore Reef and out of range as you so often are we mere mortals need an alternative.

Oh Richard! You’ve always known MY phone number (there it is – still in my signature panel at the bottom) and that is still the quickest and best way to let ME and others on the phone network and Birding-Aus learn about rare sightings!
