Best time for birding

Hi, I’m planning a trip to Inglewood, Goondiwindi and Bowra as I am a keen photographer. I used to breed parrots as a hobby, but this is a new extension to my interests. Can you please advise the best times to photograph birds in the wild? I know that parrots go down about August, so is it best to try to see them in winter time before the hens go down? And I’m guessing that another good time would be at the fledging stage. Any tips and advice would be most appreciated. Regards, Glenys ===============================

    Glenys,

You will find that there is no single best time for all parrots. In the wild, time of breeding will vary with the species, the location and sometimes from year to year, particularly in the inland where conditions are so variable. The best time of year will depend on which species you’re interested in photographing and whether there is any migration involved. Generally there will be something worthwhile to see at any time of year.

Interesting how avicultural jargon is quite different to birding jargon. I’ve never heard birders talking of birds “going down” with regards to breeding.

    Cheers,

    Carol

    Hi Glenys,

I’ve found that late afternoon is often a good time as lorikeets in particular, and sometimes rosellas, enjoy sitting and socialising in the last warmth of the day. This gives you time with them, and a range of poses.
