Last week I had guests aboard who had recently taken a barramundi fishing expedition from Horn Island in Torres Strait southwards along western CapeYork to the Skardon River. They fished in most of the streams and daily they encountered the problem of Rainbow Bee-eaters chasing fishing flies being cast for Barramundi and Saratoga. Apparently there were many times that there was a danger of a hook up with the birds, however this didn’t eventuate. Currently in the Wet Tropics there are many bee-eaters returning from Papua/New Guinea to breed. It has been an unseasonably warm winter and many smaller species of birds here are breeding earlier than usual.
