Australian Ravens in Melbourne?

Hello all.

I am very curious about Australian Ravens (Corvus coronoides) in Melbourne. Apparently, they are not a very common bird either in the city or the suburbs, but have been spotted from time to time. What I have certainly never heard of is an Australian Raven nesting or taking permanent residence here. This is what I would to find out.

Is there anybody here with experience in corvid identification (including, for example, an awareness of any misconceptions) who can state with confidence that they have seen an Australian Raven not just perching or what not but actually nesting or at least maintaining permanent residence somewhere in Melbourne?

Thank you in advance. ============================== To unsubscribe from this mailing list, send the message: unsubscribe (in the body of the message, with no Subject line) to: birding-aus-request@vicnet.net.au

Back in the 1960s, there was a large tip operating in the former Alphington Quarry, a little way north of Heidelberg Road. This attracted large numbers of Ravens and Silver Gulls. I believe that some of these birds were Australian Ravens – but at the time Australian and Little had only recently been distinguished by Ian Rowley’s research, and most observers were not brilliant at distinguishing them by calls. Certainly I recall seeing birds with baggy hackled throats at times.

After the tip was filled and closed, it became part of the Darebin Parklands. All the local Ravens these days are Littles. Australian Ravens are now very occasional visitors.

I am currently compiling information on birds in Darebin Park from 1970 on. If anyone would like to contribute information, I should be very glad to hear from them. Anthea Fleming I have lived by Darebin Creek for almost 45 years.

    Hi all,

I have just learnt that they are also occasionally found in Brunswick which is a close northern suburb of Melbourne. Again most ravens there would be Littles.

    Regards,

Dean & David and others interested,

We have a small population of ravens in Bulleen (a Melbourne suburb quite close to Box Hill). Most are Little Ravens and they do breed in the area but we also get some Ausrtralian Ravens as well. I’m not sure whether or not they are breeding here or not.

    Regards,

    Fiona

    Dean

I had assumed that the ravens in Melbourne were Little Ravens but, after taking a closer look (and listen), I was surprised to discover that Australian Ravens are present too, at least in Box Hill.

I haven’t seen any evidence of nesting but Australian Ravens seem to have a fairly constant presence in my area over the past 12 months.

    Regards

    David
