I recently read “All Things Reconsidered”, a collection articles written by that great man Roger Tory Peterson for the Bird Watchers Digest. In an article entitled “What are you really” published in March/April 1984, Petersen attempts to define and differentiate the age-old labels of birder, birdwatcher, twitcher, ornithologist etc., a topic not unfamilair on birding-aus. Whilst discussing world life lists he states “it is rumoured that Stuart Stokes of Australia claims 6125” (remember, this was 1984, almost 30 years ago). I have not before heard or read anything about the said Stuart Stokes. Does anyone have any knowledge or information about this birder and his birding? How freaky it was to read the post from Colin this morning and think that my email had been hacked! Following this round of emails about Stuart Stokes (and deja vu), I received an email from David Bishop which I think is worth posting here. David wrote, ‘I just happened to see your post whilst back in Port Moresby after leading a VENT tour of PNG. I knew Stuart back in the late 70s and early 80s and he claimed then to have the biggest list in the world. Mad his money as developer getting Kuala Lumpur going after the war and in part Singapore. Got into birding as a Commander on the Russian convoys during WW11. Had a home in Perth, WA but was indeed and englishman. Must have been in his 70s when i knew him and quite a nice if excentric gentleman – got refused entry to Gateway Hotel in PoM because of his appearance — he had fallen over in a burnt over field. So he found his way in the backway; bought the hotel and sacked the manager! I am presently reading ‘All things reconsidered’ a selection of essays written by Roger Tory Peterson for Bird Watcher’s Digest and edited by Bill Thompson III. I was surprised to read in a discussion written in 1984 about life lists, that an Australian, Stuart Stokes ‘reportedly’ had the biggest list with 6125. That begs the question , who is Stuart Stokes?
