The Asian Dowitcher was still at Manly (Brisbane, SEQ) wader roost this morning. ‘To die for’ views at much closer range than at Port of Brisbane early in the year/late last year – assuming, as I am, that it is the same bird.
For anyone who hasn’t been to the roost since Oswald went through – there is serious damage to the rock wall protecting the roost, it has been breached in several places and at the (very) high tide this morning the ‘lower’ pond was rapidly filled by the incoming seas to the point of completely drowning the island. This caused the waders to evacuate to the ‘upper’ pond. We happened to be behind the upper roost as this occurred and got even more crippling views of the AD at very close range when it arrived with the Godwits.
Brilliant!
Bob, the high tide roost is officially off limits to the general public unless you’re accompanied by approved individuals however the area is used daily by dog walkers, fisher-persons etc….
Colin I’m up in Brisbane in a few weeks for work – I have no idea what my schedule looks like, but if the AD is still around and the tides work I’d try and make time to have a look for it. What are the directions to this site and, as per Bob Inglis’ question, what are the access restrictions? Is a scope a requisite or bins OK and a scope “nice to have” at this site? Thanks Tom Wilson
I understood that the area of the Manly wader roost (in Brisbane) was out of bounds to the general public. Would someone please tell me if that has changed?
