Hi all,
Large numbers of White-browed Woodswallows, along with a few Masked, have arrived in the Capertee Valley over the weekend. We saw the first flock late on Friday afternoon, and since then the numbers have increased and spread through the valley.
Other migrants noted: first Sacred Kingfisher yesterday. Western Gerygones calling in the northern part of the valley from at least the 10th. Regent Honeyeaters are now breeding – let’s hope it’s a better year for them than other recent years. Plenty of flowering Mistletoe and Yellow Box in flower near the river, and worth keeping an eye on the Mugga Ironbark in flower along Port Macquarie Road. A word of warning – unfortunately feral pigs are prolific along parts of the Capertee River (and causing much damage to the riverbank, as they do). I had a very close encounter with a family of them last week. It’s currently possible to see Regent Honeyeaters very close to the bridge itself on Genowlan Road. No need to walk far along the river, if at all.
Heaps of birds around in general.
Cheers,
Carol

Hi all,
Woodswallows arrived today in north-east Victoria as well. A smallish flock of about 40 White-browed and 5 Masked Woodswallow around Wilby, just south of the Murray River near Yarrawonga. Weather was warm with strong notherly winds.
This has been the usual situation over the last few years, birds tend to arrive on the first warm days of spring. Last year however White-browed and Masked woodswallows were absent in NE Victoria, and acorss the state as a whole, perhaps with all the rain inland there was no need to move south.
Cheers, Michael Ramsey

Hey Guys,
Adding to the sightings of Woodswallows, yesterday I had 3 flocks, one 300+ of mixed White-browed and Masked over Broke, about 20ks west of Cessnock in the Hunter Valley. I have also just had a about 60 birds (mixed) fly over my house at Kurri Kurri, about 15k east of Cessnock in the Hunter Valley.
I usually get these birds over Kurri during September, but the last two years they havent arrived. Probably down to the drought breaking conditions inland. They came to mind last week as we have had warmer than normal temps, coupled with strong westerly winds. Its a perfect recipe for their ‘irregular’ nature.
Steve Roderick.

There were several hundred White-browed Woodswallows over the Samsonvale area (SE Qld) on Saturday (17 September) with some Masked present also, they appeared to be heading in a northerly-direction.
