Arctic Terns at Mordialloc, Victoria –

Paul, are sure that the bird seen at 8.15 today was an Arctic Tern? I ask that because Nicole Brooker has sent photos of an adult Common Tern she photographed there at 8.30. With both species there this will test the ID skills of many! Can anyone confirm that Arctic Tern was seen there today?

Further to numerous reports of the Arctic Tern being seen several times and by numerous people yesterday at Mordialloc, mainly just south of the creek mouth rather than on the large sand-filled area to its north (where many beach-goers had gathered), Chris Doughty tells me that today, after failing to find it at that site, he watched it with a Common Tern on the rock shelves up the coast at Ricketts Point between 3.00 & 3.30 p.m.

And now it’s flown out to the bay. It’s habit seems to be feeding for an hour or so and on the beach for 45 minutes to an hour. Although where it roosted yesterday is anyone’s guess.

The bird was seen and photographed between 7:00am and 7:30am today by 4 observers, but still not by Ruth and I :( We arrived at 7:32am. The beach will be busy today because of fine weather.

Don’t forget that tomorrow morning (10/10/10) is the Melbourne Marathon, Half-Marathon, Quarter Marathon, and a few other runs and walks of various lengths. St Kilda Junction is closed from 6 am to 12 noon, as are a lot of the roads between St Kilda and the MCG, including Beach Rd, St Kilda St and Ormond Pd down to Elwood.

Thanks Mike. When I spoke to Nicole at 8:45am she told me that she’d seen the bird at 8:15 and photographed it. She showed me the photo on the back of her camera and I said that I didn’t think it was the Arctic Tern – and my impression was that it was a Common Tern. Unfortunately I didn’t see a good blown-up version of the image, just the preview in the back of the camera. I got her to blow up the head for me, and I couldn’t see the “black tonsure” which was clear in the photos and video that Simon Mustoe took yesterday.

So in short, it would seem that no-one saw the Arctic Tern today. Ruth and I will be back tomorrow early in the morning, and we’ll give it another go. Given the perfect weather today, there was a large number of people on the beach today, including a girls’ beach volleyball tournament this morning! Any birds that were on the beach today, were soon flushed by kids and dogs.

    All the best,

    Paul
