Antarctic Petrel sighting near Macquarie Island

Hi all.

Thought id let everyone know that whilst returning from a recent trip to the Sub Antarctic Islands with the M V Orion an Antarctic Petrel was observed by several of the expedition team and guests inside Australian Waters near Macquarie Island on the 4th of November 2011. Inside the linked Gallery is some Antarctic Petrel images I took in Antarctica a few years ago but the last image is of the bird mentioned above.

Although probably more common in Australian waters ( especially around Macca and Heard ) than the few published records suggest there is currently only two records submitted to BARC.

There were so many amazing wildlife experiences on the trip to mention here but Grey Petrel and Southern Fulmar in Australian waters was certainly a highlight. In NZ and international waters several Broad-billed Prions, hundreds of Mottled Petrels, several Kerguelen Petrels and just huge numbers of just about every other southern seabird you can imagine.

Now I just need some time to edit all the photos.

Cheers Adrian Boyle
