Anstead Bushland Reserve – SW Brisbane

Hi All,

Managed a few hours at Anstead Bushland Reserve on the SW edge of Brisbane this morning, and had a couple of notable sightings.

Red-winged Parrot – I was surprised to see this one. I thought it was probably an aviary escapee, but then thought it was a slim possibility as a wild bird. Any thoughts? Painted Buttonquail – a single bird.

Everything else I saw was the usual more common stuff, with still plenty of Scarlet Honeyeaters, White-throated Honeyeaters, White-throated Gerygone, Rose Robin, Tawny Grassbird, Golden and Rufous Whistlers, Apostlebirds, Noisy and Little Friarbirds, Little Lorikeets and King Parrots inspecting hollows. Not sure spring has sprung quite yet, but it’s well on its way.

Regards and good birding

    Re Red-winged Parrot at Anstead.

No doubt this could be a wild bird as Steve has said but in my mind it would be unlikely but certainly not impossible – I can find no record of this species recorded in the Greater Brisbane area ( but of course that doesnt mean it hasnt) – Queensland Museum dont appear to list the species as recorded nor any other lists ive checked – I would be interested to hear if any birding-aus member may have records of this species in Brisbane? I keep a checklist of birds seen in the Greater Brisbane area on my website and I dont have this species on the list so keen for feedback.

Hi Nick. Red-wings are common enough around Warwick which is only a couple of hours away (I saw some today in fact). I don’t see why it couldn’t be a wild bird. Good sighting I reckon! Steve Murray
