Could the opponents of bird banding, flagging, etc. suggest a method which can be used to monitor the movements of birds, which does not rely on any human contact with the birds?

Interesting. There has been quite a bit of tracking of large mixed species flocks exiting the USA on their southward migrations. This has provided information on flying altitudes, route directions. Unfortunately the technology is not quite up to identifying species or individuals, nor is it able to track the birds over distances greater than a few score of Kilometres, let alone, say 16,000Km.
