Forest & Bird eAlert Many of us who regularly visit NZ were horrified to think that mining could occur in NZ national parks. A successful petition and lobbying from around the world appears to have stopped this possibility (for now at least). As an aside, for anyone interested in NZ’s wildlife, Forest and Bird is fantastic. They produce a first class mag and seem to be a positive, respected and united conservation organization (a pre-curser to BOCA/ Birds Australia perhaps?) We have subscribed for a couple of years and fully recommend membership. Cheers, Bill

Forest & Bird E-Alert Helping you take action for your environment
Congratulations to you – all our Forest & Bird supporters and members – for changing the Government’s mind about mining our national parks.
Forest & Bird is relieved that the Government has abandoned plans to mine 7000 hectares of land protected under Schedule 4 of the Crown Minerals Act. And it’s all thanks to the 37,000 Kiwis who wrote submissions, 50,000 who marched, 50,000 who signed petitions and the thousands of others who spread the message far and wide.
It was a difficult decision for Forest & Bird in March to release the Government’s plans to mine national parks. But we have been speaking up for nature since 1923, and this was a significant threat to our most precious conservation areas.
With your support, Forest & Bird will continue to work to protect all conservation land – including the 60 per cent not in Schedule 4 – from mining and other developments that threaten our wild places, plants and animals.
For more information, see here.
Please thank Prime Minister John Key and Conservation Minister Kate Wilkinson for protecting New Zealand’s precious wild places by emailing: j.key@ministers.govt.nz or k.wilkinson@ministers.govt.nz
Thank you for speaking up for nature.
