Quite an impressive video – put up with the first 20 seconds…

Hi Jim & others, In Nov 2008, at Chilli Beach, (Iron Range) Qld, we sat on the beach and watched wheeling flocks of Metallic Starlings coming in to roost for the night on a small island just offshore. Not in the millions, but still spectacular to see. I have no idea if it’s seasonal, or if they still come to the same location. I’ve just uploaded a video to YouTube, link below. Taken with an old compact digital still camera, in fading evening light, so original quality was poor, & there seems to further loss of quality when uploading.

Jim I saw (and heard) this phenomenon at dusk whilst visiting Fivebough Swamp in Leeton (NSW Riverina) in May 2002. As I agree with Carl Clifford’s comment (“Trying to control starlings, like most avian pest species, is rather like putting your hand into a bucket of water, pulling it out again and expecting to see a hole in the water.”), I suspect that the big flocks are still there or nearby. Cheers Tom Wilson

    Jim,

I have seen smallish flocks (1-2000) in Dubbo over the years. They have been an ongoing problem there, due to their roosting in the street trees in the CBD. The council there has tried to control them over the years, but after every attempt, they are back within a year or so. Trying to control starlings, like most avian pest species, is rather like putting your hand into a bucket of water, pulling it out again and expecting to see a hole in the water.

    Cheers,

    Carl Clifford

Truly awesome! Thanks for posting it. Any guesses on the size of the flock?
