Hi, I have been party to a discussion about what species of quail are farmed and sold for meat in Australia. Someone reckons the farmed quail have been bred from indigenous species, someone else reckons they are King Quail. Does anyone know the ‘real facts’?
This arose in the context of a discussion about preserving native grasslands.
Thanks – David
I believe it is illegal to sell wild mammals (eg kangaroo) in Victoria if they were killed in Victoria!

Unfortunately in states like Victoria that allow hunting, certain quail are allowed to be shot – presumably for consumption (although I do not know the legalities regarding the sale of wild game). The wild species that are allowed to be shot are Stubble Quail, and the introduced California Quail and European Quail.

They are domesticated Japanese quail. Their eggs are also sold – they are even more reliable layers than domestic fowls.
