Insuring birding equipment

I’d be interested to know which companies will insure scopes and binos? I’ve never been able to include them under household or travel insurance as there is a limit (way below the value of the equipment) on individual items.

I insure my telescope, camera, etc as an excess (or whatever they call it) through my house and contents insurer, RACV. I’ve never had any trouble, and renewal for them all is on the same date – I hate having to remember lots of different renewal dates. I’ve never had to claim, luckily, but as I go outback and on pelagics, etc, the cost of having to replace them without insurance is too frightening. The cover is supposed to cover all eventualities. Frank, Like Alastair I have a household contents policy with AAMI and utilize their “extra cover for portable valuables”. You simply nominate items ( Leica bins & Kowa scope & Manfrotto tripod in my case), assign an insured value, and pay an extra premium (not as much as you’d expect). You then have cover for any event anywhere in Australia (and o’seas I’m pretty sure). So far haven’t had to test this coverage.

Thanks everyone for your advice. I’ve spoken to AAMI, my house contents insurers, and it is not that they won’t insure – it just increases the premium by $200 a year – so I’ve decided to stop being a cheapskate and I’ve increased my policy!

    Frank,

Contact a good insurance broker, they will know which companies provide specialist cover for big ticket items such as DSLRs and optical kit.

I insure everything of mine with RAA Insurance ( Adelaide). I get cover for all my birding gear by specifying details ( as I previously stated) and by paying a higher premium to include those specific items. The flood cover on my house is a bit woolly but as I live on high enough ground to avoid any possibility of flood I’m not concerned. No rivers, no reservoirs, no flood plains.

Frank, I have had no problems with my standard AAMI home and contents policy with ‘standard extra cover for portable valuables’. Regards Alastair

    Hi Frank,

    Try:

The premiums are generally on the expensive side for insuring your gear and personally the only time I would consider taking this out is if I was to travel in a high risk area like India, Africa or South America where the likelihood of my stuff getting stolen is a lot more probable.

As a professional, if something happens to my gear, I can write it off on my business. I replace camera bodies every three years and given the cost of insurance, I can’t see the point. When I did the feasibility of it the premium was too expensive for the way that I use a camera. I would expect a scope to last a lot longer than my gear so this could be worth considering.

Still, insurance, like any other personal expenses, should be based on your habits and how you would use/need it.

I hope this info is of assistance.

    Cheers,

    Inger
