Ground floor lorikeets

Hi

I recently watched a pair of Rainbow lorikeets checking out a tree hollow beside the Maroochy River in Qld. The only unusual feature was that the hollow was only about 4 inches above ground level. The birds actually landed on the ground to hop inside and check it out.

Has anyone seen lorikeets nesting particularly low? I know that budgies will nest on the ground when all the available hollows are taken.

Cheers

Andrew

Last year we had a pair nest in a Long-leaved Box, with the entrance only 60cm from the ground. As best I could tell they did not raise their young, as did a pair nesting in a Red Stringy-bark hollow at 1.3m.

    Hi

I have over the past few years noticed several low nests of rainbow lorikeets in the area around Currumbin Sanctuary. Some are in the bases of Melaleuca trees (as close as 10-20cm above the ground). The best was a pair that nested under a concrete slab in Kropp Park at Currumbin about 100m from the beach. The slab was in the middle of a mowed parkland near the kids playground – the birds appeared to have dug out the sand under the slab, which formed the foundation for a picnic table. I noticed them there every time I took my kids to the playground over a period of about 3 weeks. The numerous people using the picnic table didn’t seem to deter these birds …

There were concerns that nesting hollows were in high demand and a limiting resource in the area around Currumbin Sanctuary, I don’t know if that explains the low nests in this area … ?

Andrew. A couple of years ago my dogs located a Rainbow lorikeet nest in a tree hollow right on ground level. It looked as though the birds had actually dug away the sand to get into the tree hollow. I could hear young lorikeets inside and I only just managed to pull the dogs away in time! This was in Shorncliffe north of Brissy. Cheers Steve Murray
