I am a long time Birdinfo user who has now been using a Mac for the past 12 months. Birdinfo is now the only software I still use on a PC so I have to use a separate computer to enter and manipulate bird sightings.
Simon Bennett, the developer of Birdinfo, indicated to me some time ago that someone had created a Mac version. Is anyone aware of whether this info is still extant and if so how can I get hold of it? I know I can set up a dual boot but at this stage I don’t want to do that.
A final question, I haven’t been able to contact Simon so is 5.2a (2008) the most recent version of Birdinfo?
Regards Alastair

VirtualBox is very good free alternative to Parallels Desktop and VMWare Fusion. The main downside is that VirtualBox’s integration with the host OS isn’t as quite as seamless as with the commercial product, but it is very solid and usable in day to day use. VMWare and Parallels Desktop allow you drag and drop between OS’s, whereas VirtualBox uses shared folders which appear as network drives in “My Computer”. It’s quite simple to setup the Mac Desktop Folder as the shared folder and this works fairly well as a way of sharing data between OSes.

Many thanks for all the responses to my question. I followed Russell’s suggestion and downloaded VMware Fusion (US$39) and Birdinfo appears to work perfectly. Regards Alastair

Hi Alastair, 5.2da 2010 is the latest version of Birdinfo that I have.
Cheers, Keith.

I don’t use Birdinfo, but I bought it for my father, who uses it on his Mac. You don’t need to have a dual boot system any more. He uses VirtualPC, which runs Windows as an application (a little slower than running it natively). It doesn’t make any real differece to a program like Birdinfo, though.
I don’t use VirtualPC any more – VMWare Fusion is a much better way of running Windows on a Mac if there’s a program you really need. It’s stable, and gives you access to all the peripherals and network connections you already have on the Mac “side”.

I am a long term Mac user, and I have not come across a port of Birdinfo for Mac. The only birding D/bases for Mac are Birdbrain, which I use and Wings. I have used wings in the past but dropped it when the changed to a subscription service.
Cheers,
Carl Clifford
