Commerce and Birding

Hi All,

It’s been great to see an increasing interest in birds & birding in Australia, and an online magazine (of sorts) like Bird-o is something I was trying to find years ago. I hope it flourishes, and I hope to be able to contribute in the future.

As a developer of a “commercial” birding enterprise, I know what it’s like to get unnecessary swipes from people who’ve taken a look at the website, and get the wrong impression. I haven’t made “profit” at all either, any income helps pay for the conservation of the birds and biodiversity on our property, and the property, it also supports our voluntary survey work. At the moment, we operate charitably and live in a caravan.

I hope there is more support for people and organisations that promote birding and conservation, maybe any anti-commercial birding attitudes are just veiled jealousy$?

“Lights fuse and stands well back”

Go Birding!

Cheers,

Simon Clayton

Technically at the moment we don’t accept advertising on the BOCA site – however we do post links for people who advertise in our magazine, so that is really splitting hairs! We regard advertising as a necessary (if fairly small) part of our operations – it helps us to maintain our services and we try to ensure that adverts are “ethical” and of interest to our readers – although there can be no guarantees in that area. Running any form of website (or publishing any form of information) costs money somewhere along the line and if advertising helps the birding community to get a better range of material then great. I’d rather have a site with adverts (which may just interest me and in any case I can ignore them unless they are too obtrusive) than no site at all. I think we are fortunate that we have a reasonable range of websites in Australia, many of which – Eremaea, Birdpedia, BirdingAus, bird-o – are run I would guess at some cost to the dedicated individuals who provide the service we can all enjoy.

I couldn’t agree more. Although I guess the pictures are still unseen given that the alternative BOCA site also accepts advertising. As for whether there was any commercial transaction between the site and the photographer that is none of my business even if I cared.

    Regards, Clive.
