Christmas Beetles

Hello everyone hope you all had a good Christmas. Sorry for the non bird question and this is directed mostly to Sydneysiders. The number of Christmas Beetles appears to me to have dropped drastically over recent years. Most times you would get up in the morning and see them strewn around the patio and under the windows where they had been attracted by the lights, nowadays I’m lucky to see more than a couple, are you finding the same thing? the beautiful Hawkesbury 60km N/W of Sydney ============================== To unsubscribe from this mailing list, send the message: unsubscribe (in the body of the message, with no Subject line) to: birding-aus-request@vicnet.net.au

Another notable insect seems to have disappeared in Melbourne, along with local forms of Christmas beetles. We no longer see the Emperor Gum moth’s splendid caterpillar, which used to be quite common. We blame the proliferating English and European Wasps, which are serious predators.

    birdos with beetles.

As one who has studied the reasons for Dieback in eucalypts, I can advise that there are fewer or more dispersed Christmas Beetles when there is a wet season

Here in Bulahdelah (mid north coast, NSW) Christmas Beetles are usually abundant. In the last couple of years I’ve had some quite large trees entirely defoliated. There aren’t any around yet this year, but, I have found some underground in my garden. My guess is that they just haven’t emerged yet, owing to the cooler than normal conditions this summer. Keith,

Christmas Beetles have been on the decline in the Sydney area for some decades, due to woodland destruction by development. I have seen hardly any up here on the Central Coast for a few years. Also, perhaps with the amount of new growth on Eucalypts and grasses, due to the recent rains, they don’t have to wander very far for a feed.

    Cheers,

    Carl Clifford
