Yesterday morning (6 October 2020) I was out fishing <1km north of Lord Howe Island and observed a steady number of Short-tailed Shearwaters flying past the island heading SW. Groups of 10-20 were fairly common and there was always a number moving through for the several hours we were fishing. I would say 100’s flew past during the course of our fishing trip. Most of the usual LHI pelagic species were also observed for this time of year.
Didn’t observe any fishing (which I have observed in previous years when returning after a lean non breeding season) and most looked in fair condition so hopefully they will get to their breeding grounds in suitable condition to breed.
Shining bronze Cuckoo’s heard and observed over the weekend so heading back to NZ for their nesting season and a flock of 10 Japanese Snipe observed this morning behind Pinetrees paddock.
There has been no sign of rodents since 9 October 2019 following the island wide rodent eradication program so it looks like their eradication has been successful. However, the eradication can’t be declared until 2 years post baiting and following a formal success check.
The wildlife (plants, insects, birds etc) are bouncing back as expected.
The island has recently opened to visitors again since being closed in March. So come and see for yourself if you feel like an “overseas” holiday
